About Me and My Project
I discovered my love for psychology before I took my first AP Psychology course. I always question what makes us different from one another, and am constantly intrigued by the individuality that each person brings to this world.
I began to think like a psychologist while volunteering at a small after school program near my high school, the Barnyard Community Center. I have channeled my love for working with children at the University of Michigan tutoring a third grade student over zoom three times a week and volunteering in the Language and Literacy Lab. Ella, the third grader that I tutor in Reading and Language Arts, struggles to read but thrives in vocabulary and pulling apart words which makes me question “why?”. At the Language and Literacy Lab, we test children of all ages in both English and Spanish to learn more about dyslexia and bilingualism and improve learning outcomes for all children. At this lab, we also study how children learn to speak and read. I constantly make connections to how our genetics and our environments shape us and have a keen instinct for noticing everything around me, helping my friends and family work through problems and come up with possible solutions. I always knew that I loved working with children, and I know that I want to make a difference in their lives in every way possible. During my junior year as a Psychology Major at the University of Michigan, I took a course called Psychology 401: Autism in the Media. In this course, we discuss media depictions of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), hear from parents raising their children with ASD and adults diagnosed, listen to renowned psychiatrists and therapists who work with children with ASD, and dive into the controversial topics surrounding diagnoses, special education, and government support. In October, I watched a film called Fly Away, following sixteen year old Mandy with severe ASD and the relationship with her mother Jeanne. Mandy needed so much help and care and I just wanted to jump through the screen and be there for her. While studying psychology or human development and diving into research, I hope that I will be able to take my ideas, hopes, and knowledge to make a positive impact on the lives of children as a child psychologist. |
